The Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum (竹中大工道具館) in Kobe, Japan, is the only museum in the country dedicated to the preservation and celebration of traditional Japanese carpentry. Established by the Takenaka Corporation in 1984 and relocated near Shin-Kobe Station in 2014, the museum houses over 30,000 tools, models, and documents that trace Japan’s long history of wooden architecture. Designed with a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern architecture, the building itself reflects the beauty of wood and harmony with nature. Inside, visitors can explore seven themed exhibition areas featuring ancient hand tools, intricate joinery techniques, and full-scale architectural reconstructions such as temple brackets and teahouse frames. The museum also offers workshops, demonstrations, and multimedia exhibits that allow guests to experience the artistry and precision of Japanese woodworking firsthand, making it a must-visit for architects, designers, and anyone interested in craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
