Studio Visit - Pumu Huang

So wonderful to reunite with my dear friend @pumu_ceramic_! We first crossed paths in Jingdezhen last year during my residency at @jdzinternationalstudio, and while doing my ceramic residency at @ccca.yixing this time around, I finally got to visit her studio right here in Jingdezhen.

Pumu Huang

Huang Pumu is a ceramic glaze painter. Born in Guangdong in 1996, she trained in traditional mural painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing, where she also worked restoring murals in ancient temples. Driven by exploration, she eventually relocated to Jingdezhen; the historic capital of porcelain where open workshops welcome curious artists. There, she continuously experiments with kilns, clays, glazes, and brush techniques. By mastering glaze density, she translates her mural art background, its expressive linework, color harmonies, and composition into a timeless, tactile, and vivid medium. Huang works across two distinct artistic directions: an imaginative narrative world rooted in the traditions of Dunhuang and Yongle murals, and an abstract, almost musical style where the glaze itself is the primary expression. She recently featured a major exhibition at Steneby Konsthall in Sweden, showcasing her extensive glaze painting collection, the Condensation Series.
