Studio Visit - Tetsuya Ishiyama
While I was @_designani in Japan for my two-month ceramic residency at @air_sccp, I had the chance to visit the shared studio of Aico Tsumori @tsumoriaico and Tetsuya Ishiyama @tetsuya_ishiyama in Shigaraki.
Tetsuya-san, who works between Shigaraki and Taiwan, creates deeply poetic ceramic works that quietly hold time and transformation, so inspiring to see his space in person.
A big thank you to Aico-san and Tetsuya-san for warmly welcoming us into your creative space, it was truly inspiring ✨

Tetsuya Ishiyama
(B. Japan, living in Japan and Taiwan)
Tetsuya Ishiyama (born 1973 in Saitama Prefecture) is a Japanese ceramic artist who splits his time between Japan and Taiwan, having held a long-term residency at the National Tainan University of the Arts from 2011 to 2014 while maintaining his own studio in Shigaraki since 2003. A pioneer of “inter-materiality,” he combines traditional techniques, such as inlay, gilding, metallic glazes, and fired-glass finishes, to create tea bowls, water jars, and mineral-like sculptural vessels that evoke geological layers and the gradual erosion of gilded forms. His work, reflecting on time’s passage, has garnered multiple awards (Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition: 2006, 2008; Taiwan Ceramics Biennale Special Prize: 2020) and is included in collections across Asia, Europe, and the US.
